New membership trends – last 30 years.

The above list of new members totals 97 for 2009. This achievement prompted me to interrogate our database as to when last we achieved this milestone. On the last page of this newsletter is the graph depicting the new member statistics going back to 1970. I am not sure when the database was computerised or how accurate the information was transferred. This data may have excluded information on members already deceased, or, having resigned. The information will be biased to a lower figure. When exporting our database from an old DOS based data base program in about 1993, very few errors were found, indicating our database to be reliably accurate.
From the graph you will see that last years figure of 97 new members was last exceeded way back in 1987. The 1980‟s were the years of the mining boom, specifically gold mining where training schemes were in full swing but still unable to fulfil the need. Many expatriates were brought in to fill the demand. Considering the present economic climate this is certainly not the case so this increase in membership is certainly something we can be proud of.
The increase in Associate membership is interesting as this is persons associated with engineering but not in possession of or intending to obtain a certificate of competency.
Another interesting phenomenon is the increasing membership trend over the last five years indicating the desire for members to be associated with an Institution representing their professional and practical interest. This is in contradiction with the trend on declining branch and member activity.
We appeal to all members, specifically the younger generation, to become actively involved in the affairs of both their associated branch and ICMEESA Council. If you are unsure of how you can become involved, please communicate to the secretary.

Establishment of a West Rand Branch.

Interest has been shown to establish a West Rand branch of ICMEESA. Members interested in supporting this initiative should contact the secretary or:

A dog named - Sex.

Engineers are practical types, with some of you perhaps buying a pet as a present for one of your family. Sometimes we do not spend the appropriate detail on the name, so I thought I would share with you this anonymous but amusing article. Everybody who has a dog calls him “Rover”, “Boy”, “Blakie” or “Spotty” for obvious reasons.

I named my dog “Sex”. She is really a great pal but has caused me a great deal of embarrassment.
When renewing his dog licence, I told the clerk at the municipal offices that I would like a licence for sex. “I‟d like one too” he replied. To clarify, I responded, “but she is a real bitch”. “I wouldn't care what she was like” responded the clerk. „You don‟t understand” I responded, “I have had Sex since I was nine years old”. He winked and said “you must have been quite a kid.”
When we went on honeymoon we decided to take the dog with. I told the motel desk clerk that I had booked a room for us and a special room for Sex. He said “You don‟t need a special room, so long as you pay your bill we don‟t care what you do.” “You don‟t understand” I said. “Sex keeps me awake at night.” “Funny, I have the same problem” replied the clerk. One day I entered Sex in a competition, but just before the competition got underway, Sex went missing. Another contestant asked me what I was looking so concerned about. I told her that I was planning to have Sex in the competition. She told me I should have booked a larger venue and sold my own tickets. „But you don‟t understand” I said, “ I was planning to win the competition and then have Sex on TV.” She responded “With cable TV that is no big deal anymore.”
Sex used to roam around at night and became a problem. As in the case of many marriages, Sex became an issue, so my wife decided to file for divorce. Deciding on the dividing of our assets, and to make sure my beloved dog stayed with me, I explained to the judge “your honour, I have had Sex since before I was married.” The judge said “the courtroom is not a confessional, so please stick to the case at hand.” I then explained to him that “It was only after marriage that Sex had left me.” He said, “Me too.”
Last night, Sex ran off again so I spent most of the night out looking for her. A policeman came up to me and asked “What are you doing in this lonely alley at 00:02 am in the morning?” I told him that I was looking for Sex.

I am out on bail, with my case coming up Friday.
